Newport Beach Police responded to a fatal traffic accident Saturday evening where a pedestrian crossing in the middle of MacArthur Boulevard before East Coast Highway was struck and killed.

At 7:36 p.m., James Edward Jackson, 26, of Laguna Niguel, was attempting to cross MacArthur Boulevard at Harbor View Drive when a tan 2003 Toyota Camry struck him down, police said.

Jackson was taken to Western Medical Center where he died from his injuries, said Sgt. Bill Hartford.

The driver, a resident of Rancho Santa Margarita, and his three passengers were not injured in the accident, Hartford said.

“Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor,” Hartford said.

All of the vehicle’s passengers were questioned by police on the scene and then released. The driver was not arrested, Hartford said.
