WESTMINSTER— Five different Eagles scored in the Westminster Tournament title game Monday at Westminster High.

It was the first tournament Estancia has won in recent memory, according to Coach Steve Crenshaw, who began coaching at the school 10 seasons ago.

Nushin Tasbihchi, Jackie Frieberger,Jillian Beck,Taylor West, and Abby Schaefer all notched goals for the Eagles (4-2).

Estancia will play host to Newport Harbor in a nonleague game today at 3:15 p.m.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Senior Michelle Figueroa took over in overtime, scoring all seven of the Mustangs’s points in the first round of pool play at the Fountain Valley Tournament Monday at Fountain Valley High.

Figueroa, who finished with a game-high 27 points, opened the overtime with a basket, then answered a Los Al two-pointer with two field goals, the latter on a breakaway after a steal. She made three of five foul shots down the stretch to cement a big win for the Mustangs.

“This was a really good win,” Mustangs Coach Jim Weeks said. “It’s a good step up to beat a Sunset League team.”

Figueroa also had 11 rebounds, eight assists and four steals for the winners (1-2).

Senior Jasmine Werdel had 14 points and seven rebounds, while junior Amy Gentling added 11 points for Mesa.

The Mustangs complete pool play tonight at 8 against Cypress, also at Fountain Valley High.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Lightning led, 39-0, at halftime and cruised to the finish in the opening round of pool play at the Liberty Christian Tournament Monday.

Junior Tierney Danner led the winners (1-0) with 17 points.

COSTA MESA — Junior returning starter Troy McClanahan had 15 points, including three three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough for the hosts in their nonleague season opener Monday.

Estancia led, 24-22, at halftime, but failed to hold on in the coaching debut of former Eagles’ star Augustin Heredia.

The Eagles return to action Thursday at Santa Ana at 7 p.m.
