Good for beginners and experts, Hanger 18, established in 1997, offers more than 10,000 square feet of space with routes varying by degree. The gym was recently renovated and features a boulder wall for free climbing, rock walls and a party deck. Routes can range up to 70 feet. The gym offers belay classes for beginners so even the most novice of climbers can get on the wall quickly and safely. Most people who venture to the walls are regulars; employees and patrons mingle and are often friends. Music blasts throughout the gym to promote an upbeat pace for what is a quality workout for amateurs and veterans.

HOURS

Hanger 18 is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

PRICE

The ideal package for first-timers to Hanger 18 is the Adult Intro. For $30 patrons get harness and shoe rental, a day pass, and a short 15-minute class on safety and climbing. Kids Intro package runs $25 for the first child and $15 for each additional child. Basic prices are $15 for an adult day pass and $10 for children. Shoe rental is $3 and $2 for harness. Private lessons run $40 an hour, which includes a day pass and gear, and the Climbing 101 package is $220 and includes four two-hour lessons and a one-month membership. Membership packages range from $47 to $900.

GETTING THERE

Take I-5 north to CA-57 north toward Pomona. Exit onto I-10 east toward Ontario. Exit and turn left at CA-83 Euclid Avenue. Follow Euclid until 8th Street and take a right and then a left on 3rd Street.

FROM TIGHT ROPES TO SLAM DUNKS

Hanger 18 offers a wide variety of specialized ropes courses that mix climbing with adventurous and entertaining activities.

Moon Dunk allows climbers, once they have reached a platform 15 feet up, to swing 30 feet across the gym while holding a ball they then have to take to the house for two points in a basket 20 feet above ground. High Wire is tight rope experience that spans 30 feet on a 1-inch line with help from an overhead line for balance, as challengers reach for the bell on the other side. Other obstacle courses include Sway Ladder, Swinging Pillars, Web Maze and Giant’s Ladder.

OFF THE WALL

At 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays Hanger 18 offers a Kung Fu class, teaching Kung Fu San Soo, Jiu-Jitsu, submission grappling techniques and cardio. The class welcomes beginners and experts. The class is $5 for nonmembers and free to members.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday a hatha yoga class is taught to take the quality muscle workout from climbing and combine it with flexibility and mental health.

The yoga class is also $5 for nonmembers and free to members.
