New prom dresses retail for $1,200 after national tour

The Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic store at Fashion Island features a new line of prom dresses in front — although high school girls may not be the most likely consumers.

The 20 dresses, selected by company founder Ashwell, date from the 1940s and 1950s and retail for $1,200 each. Over the last year, the collection has toured the country as a traveling exhibit. The dresses finally went on sale when they made their last stop Friday in Newport Beach.

“One girl wanted to use one for a wedding dress,” said sales associate Mary Ann Prideaux.

As to whether the dresses counted as shabby or chic, she noted, “I think they’re pretty chic at $1,200.”

The store plans to offer the dresses, most of which are made from tulle or crinoline, through Sunday. Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic is open at Fashion Island’s indoor Atrium Court today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call (949) 219-0663 for more information.
