CdM’s Smith leads honorees for All-PCL

Corona del Mar High sophomore setter Madie Smith has been named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Year in girls’ volleyball after helping the Sea Kings go 7-0 to win the league title for the second straight year.

Smith joins her sister Jordan, who earned Pacific Coast League honors in 2004 before graduating and heading to UCLA. Smith led the Sea Kings with 735 assists and was second with 265 digs.

Players receiving first-team recognition for the second straight year were senior outside hitter Kara Chatham (175 kills) and senior Ashley Pries, who earned the Libero of the Year honor after recording 491 digs.

Junior middle blocker Conley Kipp, who led the team with 217 kills and 45 blocks, was also a first-team pick for CdM (18-12), which advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA semifinals and the CIF State Division III Southern California Regional first-round playoffs.

Second-team players were junior opposite Jenny Martin, sophomore middle blocker Amanda Nickel, senior defensive specialist Jamie Lawson, senior outside hitter Chelsea Dalton and sophomore outside hitter Sydney Brombal.

The honorable mentions were senior defensive specialist Sarah Sullivan, senior serving specialist Alyssa Joyce, senior defensive specialist Hayley Alder and senior opposite Lindsay Fry.
