Western Tournament

ANAHEIM — Corona del Mar High senior Scott Lineback lost in double overtime in the 189-pound final to highlight Sea Kings competitors Saturday at Western High.

Lineback who came in 14-0 this season, went 2-1 in the event, but lost an 8-7 decision to a Santa Ana Valley wrestler that included a controversial call on Lineback for what the official deemed an illegal hold, according to CdM Coach Gary Almquist.

CdM senior Taylor Fanning finished third at 135 pounds, losing in the third-place match when his attempt to take an opponent to his back wound up in Fanning placing his own shoulders on the mat, effectively pinning himself.

“That’s the first time I’ve seen that in my 31 years in wrestling,” Almquist said.

Fanning won four of his five matches.

CdM senior Scott Eskew also earned praise from Almquist, finishing fourth with a 2-2 record at 140 pounds, despite having passed a kidney stone Friday.

“That’s a tough kid for ya,” Almquist said.
