FLAG FOOTBALL

The Andersen Elementary’s No. 3 flag football team of third- and fourth-grade boys had its great season end in the Southern Orange County Municipal Athletic Federation championship game.

The team from Newport Beach suffered its first loss of the season to San Clemente, 42-24, in the title game at Santa Ana College on Dec. 8. The boys completed an undefeated regular season to win their league, beating teams from Eastbluff, Newport Elementary, Lincoln and Andersen every Friday night under the lights at Bonita Creek Park.

The boys reached the Orange County championship by shutting out Santa Ana, 42-0, and then edging Saddleback, 13-7, in overtime.

The team included: Matthew Beyrooty, Connor Deverian, Robert Rowe, Stephen Von Der Ahe, Ryan Cousens, Coach Phillipe Eskander, Luke Wyatt, Jason Simaan, Drew Raguse and Danny Casey. Not pictured: Connor Bass, Ben Coffman, Patrick Jennings, Cameron Schank and Kian Shank.

BASKETBALL

Boys’ All-Net seventh grade

Newport-Mesa Sailors 43 Yorba Linda Clippers 37: The Sailors improved to 3-0 on the season with a big win Sunday. Connor Kelly had his best game of the season with 13 points, four steals and two assists. Robbie Rettig and Reid Meckler combined for 14 points, four steals and four assists while Drew Olson, Blake Motal and Jackson Pries manned the paint ripping down a combined 20 rebounds. Blake Grable had a solid all-around game with five points, four steals and three rebounds while Nick Hannah played swarming defense in the big win. The Sailors’ next game is Jan. 6.

BASEBALL

The Orange County Jets, a 12-and-under club baseball team based in Newport Beach, won two tournaments recently.

The Jets defeated previously unbeaten Long Beach Nomads, 16-7, to win the championship of the Huntington Beach Tournament. The Jets also avenged a first-round loss to the Nomads.

Baron Schwarz, who also competed for the Newport Harbor Baseball Assn., set the tone early with a three-run home run in the first inning.

The Jets’ offense was on fire with Blake Pender, another from the NHBA, and Grant Dyer both driving in two runs. Jets’ pitcher Chris Costello was able to slow down the hard-hitting Nomads to earn the championship win.

The Jets defeated the OC Hurricanes, 11-1, to reach the title game. Bryan Ludloff went three for three with three runs scored and Aaron Mayer added a triple to seal the win.

The Cobras also could not stop the Jets, who defeated them, 9-2. Brett Dare led the Jets’ offense with two home runs and a triple. Louis Raymond pitched a complete game and picked off two base runners.

The Jets also defeated the DirtDogs, 13-1, which featured a strong pitching performance from Jake Rutherford. He pitched a one-hitter and held the DirtDogs to one run. Nick Grimes sparked the Jets with two hits and three RBIs.

The Jets opened the tournament with a 5-3 loss to the Nomads.

SOCCER

The Strikers, a girls’ under-11 team that includes Newport Beach residents Nicole Lloyd and Kirsten Hansen, won the Harvest Cup during Thanksgiving weekend.

The Strikers defeated Corona United on penalty kicks for the title. They also beat the Hurricanes on penalty kicks. The Strikers shut out Fram CQ Greena nd GFC White and tied the Rampage, 1-1.

Hansen helped control the midfield, while Lloyd contributed pressure offensively as a forward.

Hansen scored a goal in the Strikers’ 3-0 win over Fram CQ Green.
