ANAHEIM — Senior 140-pounder Josh George improved to 21-0 with a technical-fall victory to help lead the Sailors to a Sunset League opening win over the defending league champions Thursday night.
It is Newport Harbor’s first league win since entering the Sunset League last year.
George opened the dual meet with a 20-4 win. After a loss in the 145-pound division, the Sailors (10-2, 1-0 in league) responded with four straight wins from seniors Josh Lithgow (152), Edgar Guadarrama, Ryan Dickey (171) and Guillermo Perez (189).
In the 125-pound division, junior Eddie Garcia secured Newport Harbor’s win with an 8-7 decision.
David Garcia, a 135-pounder who suffered a tough loss against Corona del Mar Wednesday night, bounced back with an impressive pin against Matt Spranger, who is one of the Aztecs’ top wrestlers, Newport Harbor Coach Dominic Bulone said.
David Garcia recorded the pin in three minutes, 22 seconds.
The Sailors return to action in the Estancia tournament, Jan. 4-5.

Senior Meagan Kunert had two goals and junior Emily Kaplan made five saves for Estancia (10-4), which will play at El Modena on Jan. 10.

Maui Christmas Classic
MAUI, Hawaii — Senior Nick Witte scored 14 points to lead Sage Hill School in its 70-53 loss to Friendship Collegiate Academy of Washington D.C. in a first-round game Thursday night.
Seniors Preston Oklejas and Jamie McGee scored 13 and 12 points respectively for the Lightning (4-8), who play again today.
Sage Hill lost to David Douglass High of Portland, Ore.; 59-55 in overtime. That game determined seeding in the 13-team tournament. The Lightning received the eighth seed. Friendship Collegiate Academy, which had five players ranging in height from 6-foot-5 to 6-8, is seeded No. 1.

CYPRESS — Junior Troy McClanahan scored 17 points, hitting five three-pointers, to help lead the Eagles to the pool-play win in the Oxford Academy Tournament Thursday night.
Senior Mark Allred added 11 points for Estancia (5-5), while junior Ryan Knapp and sophomore Kohl Jones scored six points each.
Juniors Tim Neumann (four points) and Micah Zirbel (two) also contributed to the win.
Estancia will face Garden Grove in the third-place game tonight at 6 at Oxford Academy.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Calvary Chapel 36,

DOWNEY — Freshman Kayla Marolt scored nine points to lead the Sea Kings in the pool-play loss to Calvary Chapel of Downey, the tournament host, Thursday night.
Corona del Mar (6-9) was without three starters, including sophomore center Katie Bergsma, junior forward Sami Stern and freshman point guard Ellie Nadal.
Bergsma was out with the flu, Stern had to attend a night class and Nadal was nursing a hand injury. Sea Kings Coach Mark Decker expects the players back after Christmas.
Corona del Mar will face Antelope Valley Christian today to close out play in the tournament. The starting trio should be able to compete for the Sea Kings when they play at Sage Hill Friday at 7 p.m., Decker said.
