Sea Kings will try to stick to Eagles’ Thompson

Faced with the task of defending Santa Margarita High’s 6-foot-6 star, Klay Thompson, Corona del Mar Coach Ryan Schachter stayed honest.

“We don’t know yet who we’re going to put on Klay,” Schachter said with a smile after his boys’ basketball team recently beat Esperanza. “He can do everything.”

The Sea Kings (7-3) will try to limit what the Washington State-bound senior does in a showdown tonight against Santa Margarita (10-1) at the North-South Challenge at El Toro High at 8.

Thompson, the son of Mychal Thompson, the NBA’s No. 1 Draft pick in 1978, does one thing better than his father did on the court for the Portland TrailBlazers, San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers. He can shoot and his father talks quite often about it during his “Loose Cannons” radio show with Steve Hartman on AM 570 KLAC.

Thompson is averaging 20.1 points per game and he’s already recorded two 30-plus scoring games. The job as to who will try to slow down the quick guard might rest on the shoulders of Joe Eberhard and Adam Brakeville, two 6-6 forwards. This is a big test for the defending CIF Southern Section Division III champion Sea Kings.
