Newport-Mesa to receive visit from Santa Ana winds

Forecasters predict brisk Santa Ana winds this Christmas, bringing with them an increased risk of wildfires, officials said.

Wind speeds of 20-to-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected until 8 p.m. today, National Weather Service forecasters said. Also, a high tide of 7.5 feet may bring coastal flooding to some areas of Newport Beach.

“The higher winds are supposed to be more out in the mountains and passes,” said National Weather Service forecaster Jennifer Chase.

Considering the dry weather, fire authorities stress the use of caution and even over-preparedness.

Newport Beach firefighters responded to a number of candle fires and a some turkey-in-oven scorches over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. But this time of year, electric lights for the Christmas tree provide a whole new set of problems, officials said.

Local fire departments recommend the use of only lights that have been safety tested. Such lights can be easily identified by a “UL” label from Underwriters Laboratories, fire officials said.

Always read the manufacturer’s instructions thoroughly.

Also, check each set of lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections. And make sure which lights are made for outdoor use. Never use indoor lights outside.

Don’t overload power outlets or light sockets with too many cords. Limit each socket to no more than three sets of lights per extension.

All bulbs should be turned away from paper ornaments and wrapping paper. Be careful with candles and avoid putting them on the Christmas tree.

“We want everyone to have [a] fun holiday and remember to stay safe,” said Jennifer Schulz, a spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department.
