Newport Mesa Sailors: The Newport-Mesa Sailors took second place in the Holiday Classic last week. The Sailors lost to the San Diego Swoosh in the championship game, 42-48.

Luke Langdon led all scorers with 13 points and four assists, while Jackson Pries (eight points, seven rebounds), Blake Motal (five rebounds), Blake Grable (four points, two assists), James Newman (four points, two assists), Kris Picarelli (four points, four rebounds), Robbie Rettig (five points), Connor Kelly (two points) and Drew Olson (two rebounds) all played well in the loss.

The semifinal game against the Whittier East Wolfpack proved to be tough for the Sailors, who were down 16 points early in the second half, but won in overtime. In overtime, Langdon hit a running shot, while Grable hit a huge three-pointer to seal the Sailors’ victory.

The Sailors dug deep and were led by the tenacious defense of Newman, Langdon and Kelly, who brought the Sailors to within six in the final minutes of the game. Motal and Pries were outstanding in the paint and led the comeback with solid defense and rebounding. The Sailors tied the score late in the game with big shots from Pries, Grable and Rettig.

In the second round, the Sailors beat the Lake Forest SCF Hoops, 68-28. The attack was well-balanced led by Grable (12 points, five rebounds), Langdon (10 points, four assists), Kelly (nine points, three steals), Newman (eight points, three assists), Picarelli (eight points, four rebounds) and Rettig (eight points, four assists).

The Sailors dominated the Jurupa Hot Shots, 54-21, in the first round of the tournament with a very balanced attack offensively. Rettig led all scorers with 12 points and four steals, while Grable, Kelly, Langdon and Motal each scored nine points.
