City to expand bridge for better access to freeway

A $5.5-million project to broaden the Fairview Road bridge over I-405 was approved in a 4-0 vote during a City Council meeting Wednesday evening.

The project includes the installation of seismic safeguards on the bridge, as well as extra lanes both entering and exiting the freeway.

Costa Mesa Public Services praised the project as one that would encourage improvement in local traffic and ease access to the freeway — especially during the congested rush hour, which often sees a line of traffic that extends to South Coast Drive.

Construction will begin later this month and is expected to be completed by December of this year.

Funding was made available through Measure M, a Bicycle Transportation Account Grant, and Home Ranch Development Funds.
