Anteaters’ divers sweep

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Jackie Jones and UCI freshman Miles Smith swept the women’s and men’s events, respectively, at the two-day UC Irvine Diving Invitational, completed Sunday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Jones won the three-meter title Saturday with a score of 248.2. UCI junior Rachel Pearson (238.15), and UCI freshman Caitlin Yuen (202) finished second and third, respectively.

Jones won the one-meter event Sunday with 235.4 points, topping Pearson (212.7) and senior Kelly Janicki (202.1).

Smith won the three-meter title Sunday with 340.85 points, the third-best score in UCI history.

UCI sophomore Eric Nugent was second (276.55), while Anteaters freshman Raymond Yan was third (243.9).

Smith topped the field in the one-meter event Saturday. His 260.85 points easily bested Nugent (193.15) and UCI sophomore Charles Yan (189.45).

In addition, the UCI men won the swimming relay title at the UC Irvine Ayres Hotel & Suites Relay Invitational Sunday at UCI.

UCI’s 417 points easily topped runner-up Claremont-Mudd Scripps (322), as the Anteaters captured their fourth straight relay title in the event.

UCI won all 10 events, including a meet record of three minutes, 26.05 seconds in the 400-yard medley relay.

The UCI women finished second to San Jose State in Sunday’s relay meet.

The Spartans and Anteaters each won five women’s relay events, but San Jose State totaled 336 points, to UCI’s 277.

UCI set a meet record in the three-by-100 butterfly relay with a time of 2:50.91.
