Parents single out Adams as needing improvement

A group of parents calling themselves the Mesa Verde Education Committee told the Newport-Mesa school board Tuesday they were ashamed of their local schools and don’t see anything changing soon.

In their wide-ranging litany of complaints, test scores and demographics stuck out. Many of the parents said they send their kids to other, better performing schools. Adams Elementary School was singled out by parents. State scores have been rising in most areas at the school for two years consecutively, but remain some of the lowest in Newport-Mesa.

“I am certainly not ashamed of Adams school. I think Adams school is a good school,” said Supt. Jeff Hubbard. “But there can be improvement.”

Early in the meeting five students from Newport Beach elementary schools were congratulated for their award-winning Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) essays on why they will stay drug free.
