Irwin Putnam McElroy, born June 27th 1919 in Moscow, Idaho. Passed away Sunday January 13th 2008 at 88 Years old with Son’s Richard, Donald & Kenneth by his side. Heart failure was the main cause of death, he passed away at Kaiser Hospital Woodland Hills, Ca. at 3:20 pm

Irwin served in the 93rd Infantry in 1945, eventually reaching the rank of Supply Sergent, was stationed in the Alution Islands in Alaska and post war Japan for 6 months. Irwin was honorably disharged. After the war he continued to serve in the army reserves and was later called to duty again in Korea. On August 11th 1943 married Marion Ruth Endom (deceased). They were living in Torrance, Ca.

In 1948 moved to Lakewood, Ca. then the birth of daughter, Marilyn McElroy, born 09/17/49, next was son Richard Earl McElroy born 09/06/1953 then son Donald Irwin McElroy born 03/17/1955. Family moved to La Mirada, Ca. in 1957 where Irwin worked for the family business McElroy & Sons Plumbing. They had a son, Kenneth Eugene McElroy born 09/08/61. Family was very involved in Christ Presbyterian Church in La Mirada.

Irwin began working for the State of California at Fairview State Hospital as a Plumber in 1970. In 1971 family moved to Costa Mesa where Irwin resided until his death. Irwin was President of the California State Employee’s Union (CSEA) and later Treasurer. He received many awards in regognition of his longtime dedication to the CSEA throughout his long run as Treasurer. After retiring from the state Irwin worked for HICAP, a company that helped promote retirees rights.

He is survived by his Daughter Marilyn, Sons Richard, Donald and Kenneth, daughters in law Cheryl McElroy, Vivian McElroy and Rhonda McElroy, grandchildren, Mia McElroy, step-grandchildren James Felix, Alvin Felix, Patrick Porter, Justine Porter, grandchildren Sarah McElroy, Sean McElroy Nephew Roy McElroy & Family, Peggy Wood & Family, Sylvia Sturges & Family, Melinda Hess & Family and Laurie Owens & Family. As well as the many friends Irwin garnered through the CSEA and HICAP.
