Concerts, museum trips planned for MLK holiday
Though Monday is the official day of recognition for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, locals are finding ways to honor the late civil rights leader beyond taking a day off.
On Sunday, Christ Our Redeemer AME Church offers its ninth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Concert in UCI’s Barclay Theater. At 4 p.m., Bishop Noel Jones’ The City of Refuge Sanctuary Choir will get the concert started, followed by the Faithful Central Bible Church Choir. The church’s choir will conclude the event. Tickets are $20, and limited VIP seating is available for $50. For information call (949) 854-4646.
On Monday, the Newport-Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council is driving the public to the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. At 9 a.m. the school bus leaves from the Costa Mesa city hall and returns at 3 p.m. Admission is $13 per person at the museum, $11 for seniors and $10 for students. There is a $5 contribution for the bus ride. For more information call (714) 921-8665.
Not to be left out, Christ Lutheran School in Costa Mesa is hosting a 45-minute show on Jan. 28 honoring King. Through songs, dance, monologues and poetry, the “Martin Luther King Jr.” one-man show will explore the civil rights leader’s life from birth to his assassination. The all-school assembly is scheduled on campus at 1:45 p.m.
