Bacteria levels may be dangerous in coastal waters

Health officials warned swimmers Tuesday to avoid Orange County costal waters for up to three days due to storm runoff that could raise bacteria levels.

Runoff from storm drains, creeks and rivers can contain contaminants like fertilizers, road oils animal wastes and litter, according to the Environmental Health Division of the Orange County Health Care Agency. During and after rainstorms, ocean and bay water may contain large amounts of bacteria from a variety of sources such as animal waste and decomposing vegetation, according to officials.
