District, city to discuss joint facility use

The Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education has appointed El Hathaway and Theresa O’Hare to work with Laguna Beach Mayor Jane Egly and Mayor Pro Tem Cheryl Kinsman to discuss the joint use of school and city facilities.

Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Norma Shelton and Assistant City Manager John Pietig will be the staff support to the committee.

College plans open house, portfolio review

Laguna College of Art & Design, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road, will host an open house and portfolio review for new and prospective students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 9.

Ample free parking is available, and breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Open House and Portfolio Review Day is an opportunity for prospective students to meet with the admissions staff and faculty. Workshops and presentations regarding admissions, portfolio advising, financial aid, scholarships and curriculum are included in the day’s events, along with guided tours of the campus.

During the event, students will have the opportunity to present their portfolio to representatives who will review artwork, and offer critique, guidance and direction in creating the portfolio. The Laguna College Open House and Portfolio Review Day is open to all prospective students, as well as parents, teachers, counselors, and guests.

The day will open with check-in and breakfast at 9:30 a.m., followed by the president’s welcome and an admissions presentation at 10 a.m., a financial aid overview at 10:45 a.m., lunch at 11:30 a.m., and presentations by major and portfolio reviews at noon.

Teen musician invited to conference

Laguna Beach teen Evren Ozan has been invited to perform at an academic conference to be at the Turkish House in the United Nations Plaza later this month.

The event explores the possible common roots between Turks and Native Americans, and guest speakers include professors, sociologists and representatives from Native American tribes.

Evren, who is part Osage and part Turkish, plays the Native American flute; his latest album, ALLUVIA, is the recent winner of the 2007 Native American Music Award for Best Instrumental Album.
