Registrar tests polling devices for accuracy

The Orange County Registrar of voters will begin testing its electronic polling devices for compliance with state measures aimed at ensuring voting accuracy.

The machines, which include a paper print out of voters’ ballots, will be checked for accuracy in both print and electronic tallying.

“We generate votes in a spreadsheet, and in every precinct we cast ballots, and then compare what we cast to the votes created,” Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley said. “They should be identical all the way across.”

A grand jury also assessed the county’s reliability in meeting other benchmarks and found no holes in the county’s system, Kelley said.
