Sawdust studio tour seeks artists

The Sawdust Art Festival is seeking professional artists who would like to open their studios for its April 12 Artist Studio Tour.

The tour is not a gallery visit “” only working studios are suitable for the tour. Artists must be prepared to demonstrate their art for tour-goers, who will arrive, with a guide, in groups of 10 to 15. Participating artists do not have to be Sawdust exhibitors.

The Sawdust Art Festival’s Art Studio Tour takes visitors on an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the working studios of Laguna Beach artists. Approximately 200 art-lovers from around the nation attend the annual event. The tour provides an excellent opportunity for Laguna’s artists to showcase their talents to an interested and knowledgeable clientele.

Museum board member Boseker passes away

Laguna Art Museum board member Edward H. Boseker, 71, passed away of a heart attack Jan. 27.

Boseker and his wife, Yvonne, had a vacation house in Laguna Beach where they entertained and showed their extraordinary art collection.

Boseker had a great appreciation for early California art, and joined the museum board in April 2005. In addition, he was co-chairman of the museum’s Historical Art Council.

Boseker was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Helen and Herbert Boseker Feb. 16, 1936. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors of Science in geology in 1958, and went on to medical school at Indiana University where he met he wife who was in nursing school at the time.

He later began his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic. In 1967, he finished his training and moved to California to start his private practice. He worked in Santa Ana, specializing in disorders of the spine for the last 36 years. He and his wife raised 4 daughters: Andrea, Susan, Resa, and Tanya.

Over the years, he had many interests and hobbies. He owned a ranch in Temecula and enjoyed weekend farming for many years. He was a Tustin school board member for nine years and served as president twice. Boseker looked forward to traveling in his motor home and spending time at Lake James in Indiana each summer with his children and grandchildren.

He maintained a close relationship with the Mayo Clinic over the years, and was a member of the Doctors Mayo Society.

He and his wife are principal benefactors of the Mayo Clinic. His interest in the Boy Scouts of America led to his desire to endow the Inland Empire Boy Scouts, who often camped on his ranch.

He is survived by his wife, a brother, four daughters, and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Fairhaven Memorial Park and Mortuary, 1702 Fairhaven Ave., Santa Ana, with a reception to follow at the Tustin Banquet Center. Contributions in his memory can be made to the National Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org or the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org.

Local artists participate in regional show

Laguna Beach artists Karen Feuer-Schwager, Patricia Whitesale Phillips and Suzette Rosenthal will participate in Southern California Artists’ annual Valentine’s Day art show, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?,” from Feb. 13 to March 14 at the Calafia Art Gallery, 2035 Main St. in Santa Ana.

An artists’ reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 13; hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served. Southern California Artists is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for professional and emerging artists, with dialogue, education, and interaction at all stages of the creative process, from inspiration to exhibition.

Board shop opens second store, gallery

Custom surfboard shop Costa Azul, 689 S. Coast Hwy., has opened its second store, CA, 750 S. Coast Hwy., this month; it will be open during First Thursdays Art Walk Thursday.

The new location will feature oil paintings and photography by local artists in its Greenup gallery. The store will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the winter and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the summer.

First Sundays welcomes string duo

Laguna Beach Live! Will present members of the Hutchins Consort in a free chamber music concert from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Bassist Joe McNalley and violinist Beth Folsom will be playing Deuttini Concertati by Virgilio Mortari, among other works.

The program, a collaboration of Laguna College of Art & Design and Laguna Beach Live!, is an afternoon of music and art at the college’s gallery, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road. The gallery opens at 2 p.m. with the illustration exhibition of works by visiting artist Anita Kunz.?

Folsom is a former member of the LA Phil and San Diego Symphonies. She has also played with the Los Angeles Opera, The San Diego Opera and the Mainly Mozart Festival among others.
