Breakers still rolling
It was a win, and an easy one at that.
But it wasn’t a completely satisfying effort to Laguna Beach boys’ basketball Coach Bret Fleming.
Wednesday night at Dugger Gym, Laguna rolled past visiting Estancia, 64-40, to remain perfect in league play.
Laguna actually trailed, 13-12, after one quarter but turned it on in the next two quarters where they outscored the Eagles 37-14 to open up a 49-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Ryan Lawler led Laguna with 17 points. Kevin Buck scored 15, Dylan Roley 11 and Kenny Sullivan scored six points.
“We played all right. Not great, but all right,” Fleming said. “It was a good game for us in the fact that we got to play all 12 guys and several of them scored.”
Rounding out Laguna’s scoring were Charley Bowman and Parker King with four points apiece, Marcus Hairston had three points and Jason House and Matt Ininns each scored two.
Prior to routing Estancia, the Breakers had notched a 45-25 win at Costa Mesa Jan. 25. Sullivan’s 16 points led all scorers.
Laguna led 13-3 after one and was never threatened.
The Mustangs scored in double figures in just one of the four quarters, netting 10 points in the third quarter en route to their lowest point total of the year.
“On the defensive side of the ball, I thought we played real well,” Fleming said. “Offensively, we didn’t execute as well as I would have liked to have seen. We were as fired up as I had hoped we’d be for the game.”
Laguna, now 6-0 in league and 18-5 overall, should need no pilot light lit tonight when it tips off at 7:30 p.m. at Calvary Chapel. The Breakers have won both prior league meetings this year with the Eagles, the first being a slim, 32-31 victory in a league opener Jan. 11.
Laguna also defeated the Eagles 64-46 on Jan. 23.
“They absolutely pack the place at Calvary,” Fleming said. “They have a great home-court advantage. They’ll be fired-up to get us.
“On our side, we just need to stay focused. We want to finish undefeated in league.”
Next week, Laguna will host Costa Mesa at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and then complete their league schedule Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. road game at Estancia.
Fleming said that the program will honor its senior players “” Bowman, Buck, House, Ininns, King, Lawler, Sullivan, Dylan Doumeng, Jacky Norris and Graham Unterberger “” prior to the start of Tuesday’s game against Costa Mesa.
