One-goal win moves Laguna atop standings
The Laguna Beach boys’ soccer team moved into the lead in the chase for the Orange Coast League championship by defeating visiting Estancia Wednesday, 2-1, at Guyer Field.
The Breakers survived a flurry of shots by the Eagles at game’s end to get the victory.
They scored the winning goal with less than 10 minutes to play off a corner kick by Edgar Rabadan to Bryce Healy.
Laguna also never trailed, taking a 1-0 halftime lead when Sheldon Eaton scored off a throw-in by Caine Fair.
Alex Germano had three saves.
It was Laguna’s second league win over the Eagles this season “” on Jan. 18, the Breakers posted a 2-0 win at Estancia.
Laguna had picked up its third league win Jan. 25 when the Breakers blanked host Costa Mesa, 1-0.
Healy scored a first-half goal and the Breakers defense made it stand.
Germano’s seven saves contributed to the shutout.
The league race now comes down to the final three games of the season, beginning at 3 p.m. today for Laguna with a road test against Calvary Chapel.
The Breakers then play host to Costa Mesa at 3 p.m. Monday.
Laguna has an 0-1-1 mark against Calvary in two previous closely-contested league matches played last month.
The Breakers conclude league play Wednesday with a 3 p.m. game at Estancia.
