COSTA MESA — Sophomore Jennifer Bergh went a combined five for seven with three runs scored as the Lions swept the nonconference doubleheader Saturday at Vanguard.

Senior Jen Olvera earned the win in Game 1, allowing just one hit in five innings and striking out nine before being relieved by her sister, freshman Patricia Olvera. Sophomore Melissa Forrester won Game 2 for the No. 10-ranked Lions, allowing two runs in four innings of work.

Vanguard plays host to Bethany on Friday at 1 p.m.

WOMENS’ WATER POLO

UC Irvine 6, Hartwick 4

IRVINE — The No. 9 UC Irvine women’s water polo team (1-0) defeated No. 10 Hartwick 6-4 Saturday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Julia Fancher picked up a hat trick, scoring her third goal of the game with 5:30 left in the match to give UCI a 5-2 lead. Jessica Lewis had two goals, and scored at the 3:35 mark for the Anteaters’ last goal of the match.

Senior UCI keeper Lauren Machanis had 10 saves. Keeper Jessica Dorman had seven saves for Hartwick.

UCI will play Brown Feb. 9 in the opening round of the Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatics Center in La Jolla.

AQUATICS

UC Irvine def. UC Davis

IRVINE — Both the UC Irvine men’s and women’s swimming and diving defeated UC Davis Saturday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The Anteater men won 158-142 and the women won 184-116.

The Anteater men won 10 of 16 events.

Senior Eddie Erazo won the 200 fly (one minute, 47.95 seconds) to set a pool record. Erazo also won the 200 back (1:50.59). Sopohmore Will Wollam won the 50 free (21.09 seconds) and the 100 fly (50.15). Freshman diver Miles Smith won the one-meter (197.35) and the three-meter (298.50) events.

The UCI women won 14 of 16 events.

Senior Chelsea Nagata and sophomore Lyndsay DePaul won all three of their events. Nagata won the 100 back (56.72), the 50 free (23.67) and the 100 fly (55.78). DePaul won the 200 free (1:50.66), the 200 fly (2:01.68) and the 400 IM (4:18.83). Freshman Ann Tsuchiya won the 1000 free (10:22.91) and the 500 free (5:02.42). Seniors Tanya Nielsen and Rian Wise finished in a tie for first in the 100 free with a time of 52.87.

The Anteaters will compete at the Big West Conference Championships February 20th at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.

Long Beach City 3,

Orange Coast 2

LONG BEACH — Orange Coast suffered its first loss of the year at the hands of Long Beach City pitcher Randy Serrato at Joe Hicks Memorial Field Saturday.

The sophomore pitcher, now 1-0, pitched six and two-third innings, allowing one hit and two unearned singles. Serrato struck out three and walked none to earn his first win of the season.

The Vikings committed a season-high six errors.

With the win, the Vikings (3-2) snapped a two-game losing skid. The Pirates, who defeated Long Beach City 11-1 Friday, are now 2-1 against the Vikings.

Freshman Scott Watson struck out two batters in the ninth to earn his first save.

The Pirates took advantage of a pair of infield throwing errors in the third and second baseman Ryan Dunn scored on a squeeze bunt by third baseman Kyle Muhlsteff to tie the game up 1-1.

Two more errors led to the Pirates’ final run of the game in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and third, shortstop Brent Wallach hit into a double play but drove in the Pirates’ last run.

The Pirates host Southwestern Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Wendell Pickens Field.
