Vanguard 9, Patten 4

COSTA MESA — Junior first baseman Derek Craddock went two for five with four RBIs to lead the Host Lions in the nonconference game Monday.

Craddock doubled in a pair of runs in a three-run third for the hosts (2-1), then added a two-run single in a five-run eighth.

Junior right fielder Jason Machado went two for five, including a double and a triple, with one RBI and one run, while junior shortstop Zach Leighton was two for four with an RBI and a run for the winners.

Senior left fielder Luke Iverson, junior second baseman Kyle Bondurant and sophomore center fielder Tyson Leighton had one RBI apiece to help Vanguard junior starting pitcher Chris Carls pick up the victory.

Carls allowed five hits and one earned run in five innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Freshmen Justin Layne (one earned run in three innings) and Bryce Reid (a hitless ninth) finished up for Carls

Keegan Freeman, Kenneth Dobbs and Roley Munoz all added to the Lions’ 12-hit attack.

Patten fell to 0-9.

The Lions return to action Wednesday, when they face visiting Bethany in a doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m.
