The Navy League Newport Beach Council has elected Vincent Van Den Brink as president for 2008, according to Sally Nockold, who was elected vice president for council events.

Also serving with Van Den Brink are Wally Ziglar, executive vice president; Jim Bras, vice president for legislative affairs; Bill Mansfield, secretary; Phil Ramer, treasurer and Gene Moriarty, judge advocate.

The local council has 278 members and meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Newport Beach.

The local council has adopted and supports the men and families of the USS Tarawa, USS Bonhomme Richard, USS Topeka SSN754, USCGC Narwahl, USS Cleveland LPD-7, Beach Masters Unit, Coronado Amphibious Base, MCAS Miramar, 3rd Marine Airwing; US Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach and the U.S. Navy Sea Cadets, El Toro Squadron. LIONS HONOR THREE MEMBERS

The Harbor Mesa Lions recently honored two members with Melvin Jones Fellowship awards. They were Kathy Blake and Bernice Ellis. A Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship was presented to Marianne Allen. This prestigious award, named for the founder of Lions International, is given each year to members who have been outstanding in their work and dedication to the organization and to the community.

ASK THE CLERGY

“Ask the Clergy,” featuring Imam Sayed Moustafa al-Qazwini of the Islamic Education Center of Orange County, Rabbi Marc Rubenstein of Temple Isaiah and Rev. Holly Reinhart-Marean of Christ Church by the Sea will be on the program for the Feb. 20 luncheon meeting of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council according to Rev. Dennis Short, council president.

Attendees will be able to submit questions about religion and religious practices to the panel according Short. The meeting will be held at the Islamic Education Center, 3194 Airport Loop Drive, Costa Mesa.

A Persian lunch will be provided by the center. Cost of the meeting is $10 with a reservation, $12 without a reservation. Reservations must be made by Friday, Feb. 15 by calling (714) 921-8665 or by e-mail to nmiinterfaith@aol.com
