UCI’s Gorgen collects another preseason honor
UC Irvine junior starting pitcher Scott Gorgen has been named a Rivals.com preseason second-team All-American.
Gorgen, the lone representative from the Big West Conference, picked up his third preseason All-American honor this year after receiving recognition from Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. in December.
Gorgen enjoyed a banner year in 2007, winning 13 games to finish tied for third in the nation in wins. The right-hander had six complete games, including three complete-game shutouts, and posted a 2.83 earned-run avearge.
His sophomore campaign included 117 strikeouts to rank No. 22 in the country and he recorded an .813 winning percentage, the fifth-best mark in UCI single-season annals.
UCI opens the season at Nevada, Feb. 22-24.
Its home opener is Feb. 27 against USC at 7 p.m.
