COSTA MESA — Junior right-hander Richard Jessup went the distance, allowing five hits and striking our four in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Wednesday.

Jessup walked four to improve to 2-0 as the host Lions (5-3, 1-2 in conference) scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and eighth and played errorless defense to record their first conference win.

Junior shortstop Zach Leighton opened the scoring with an RBI single to score his brother Tyson Leighton in the second. Zach Leighton finished three for four with two RBIs, while junior first baseman Derek Craddock was two for four with an RBI to also bolster the Lions’ eight-hit attack.

Junior shortstop Nick Rotkowitz, a product of Orange Coast College, went hitless in three at-bats to see his average fall to .346 for Biola (4-3, 1-2).

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Kevin Welch had a career-high 30 kills to help the Pirates produce a 30-18, 30-28, 27-30, 26-30, 15-12 nonconference win over visiting Santa Monica Wednesday.

Setter Corey Ferraro collected 44 assists and libero Andrew Puzula had eight digs for OCC (2-1).

Last season, OCC and Santa Monica battled through two five-game thrillers, including one in the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Orange Coast returns to the court on Friday at home against Santa Barbara, beginning at 6 p.m.
