THERMAL — The Lightning allowed the most goals in a game this season in their wild-card loss of the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs Wednesday.

Sage Hill had never allowed more than two goals this year. The Lightning had also been unbeaten in its previous six matches before facing Desert Mirage.

Sage Hill ends its season at 7-7-4.

Edison 83

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors won the last two heats by one point to score the nonleague victory over Edison (7-2) at 56th Street Wednesday morning.

The two teams were tied for six heats, but the Sailors (9-1) won the last two heats.

Newport Harbor won five of eight heats and three of the four events.

The boys’ shortboard squad won, 44-40, after taking three of the four heats. Victor Done had the top average wave score with 6.8. Eric Heimstaedt, Cameron Clark and Mark Contreras all took second in their heats.

Bobby Okvist, Tyler Tarlow and Jared Cassidy were third.

Newport Harbor’s bodyboard squad won, 11-10. Yuji Kanbayashi took second place and Joe Suzuki placed third.

The boys’ longboard squad won ,11-10, as Robert Guy took second and Andy Delorme was third.

The Sailors’ girls’ shortboard squad lost, 11-10, its first loss of the season. Kaleigh Gilchrist finished in first place for the eighth time this season.

Hailey Sandberg also took first in the longboard, but the girls still lost, 12-9.

Newport Harbor will face Edison again March 5 at River Jetty North in Huntington Beach.
