WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 83, Riverside 55

RIVERSIDE — Freshman forward Simone Ibbotson scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help the Pirates clinch at least a share of the Orange Empire Conference title Friday.

Katie Kissee added 15 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Pirates (27-3, 11-1 in conference). Courtney Ford added 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds and teammate Brittany Taylor chipped in 10 points.

PALM DESERT — Freshmen Ryan Sheeks and Austin Elliott both went three for four to help lead the Pirates to the nonconference win Friday.

Elliott, a Corona del Mar High product, also scored a run, while Sheeks produced a triple in the ninth inning.

Brandon Dixon, the Pirates’ sophomore left-handed pitcher, struck out six, walked one and allowed four hits in eight innings.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Kevin Welch had a match-high 16 kills to lead the Pirates to a 30-18, 30-21, 30-24 nonconference win Friday.

Andrew Pizula led OCC’s defense with eight digs, while setter Corey Ferraro paced the offense with 22 assists.

COSTA MESA — The No. 10 Lions suffered their first loss of the year in Game 1, but rebounded for the Game 2 victory in the doubleheader Friday at Vanguard.

The second game was called in the fifth inning due to darkness.

Vanguard (9-1) tied the score of Game 1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Angela St. Croix’s RBI single scored Jen Olvera. But Belhaven scored a run in the top of the 10th for the win.

Olvera allowed just two hits and no earned runs in nine innings, striking out nine, but received a no-decision.

COSTA MESA — The No. 4 Lions won all 12 of the singles sets played in their Golden State Athletic Conference opener Friday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

In doubles, the teams of Hana Jurcovicova and Damia Donkervoort, as well as Jelena Jovic and Anna Valingsten, also won for Vanguard (2-0, 1-0 in conference).

SAN DIEGO — Anteaters freshman Ryan Mayer clinched the victory at No. 6 singles in the nonconference match Friday at the University of San Diego.

Also winning in singles for No. 60 UC Irvine (2-3) were Trevor Dobson, Khunpol Issara and Stephen Stege.

RIVERSIDE — Sophomore guard Shaun Engle had a career-high 29 points for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday at Riverside.

Engle added eight three-pointers for OCC (6-21, 2-8 in conference), and forward Brian Helmuth had 18 points.

IRVINE — Junior Sarah Frost scored twice for UC Irvine in its Mountain Pacific Sports Conference opener Friday at UCI.

Kat Plummer added a goal for the No. 9 ’Eaters (4-2, 0-1 in conference) against the No. 1 Bruins (11-0, 1-0). Lauren Machanis made five saves and UCLA goalie Brittany Fullen, a Corona del Mar High product, had six saves.
