Two UCI researchers received a boost from the Sloan Fellowship Friday.

The fellowship honored Alan F. Heyduk and Bill Tomlinson with $50,000 over two years to pursue research in a field of their choosing. The award is a high honor, as only 118 scientists are honored from colleges and universities.

Heyduk is an assistant professor of chemistry and has been at UCI since 2003. He conducts research of fundamental chemistry problems related to alternative energy.

Tomlinson is a professor of informatics and is studying the relationship between information technology and environmental issues. He also started at UCI in 2003.

The Sloan Fellowship was started in 1955 and was distributed to scientists on 64 campuses this year. Heyduk and Tomlinson are the eighth and ninth researchers to be awarded the fellowship at UCI in the last five years.
