Girls’ Under-12 Gold All-Stars

Newport Chargers 2, Tustin 0: The Chargers completed an undefeated all-star season with a hard-fought victory over a strong squad from Tustin.

The Chargers secured the Area Q Championship with their sixth shutout victory of the season. Needing only to score one goal to clinch the championship, the Chargers were held scoreless until late in the fourth quarter when Kate McFetters hit a shot from the left wing that found the back of the net. Minutes later, Emily Nall added an insurance goal from her spot on the right wing. Newport’s defense was superb as it has been all season long and was anchored by Katelyn Mead, Emily Cook, Jenna Nulty and McKenna Johnson. Tyler Stupor was flawless in goal. Newport’s midfielders controlled play in the middle of the field for much of the game, especially in the second half thanks to the efforts of Megan Daly, Kathryn De la Torre and Britney Myers. Kenya Avila played an exceptional game at center forward and created the scoring opportunities for the other forwards. Newport’s Chargers will represent Area Q in the section playoffs on March 1 and 2.

Girls’ Under 10

The Golden Girls dominated the second half. Kate Hefner scored two goals off very nice assists from a heads-up Kelly McFetters. Hefner’s second goal was a fireball that nailed the top crossbar and spun into the goal. Jaci DeFeo added one more goal after she took a high shot from way outside that floated over the Corona del Mar goalkeeper. Peyton Groves and Bailey Scalzo played excellent defense to shut down Corona del Mar in the second half.
