COSTA MESA — Vanguard senior Jennifer Olvera pitched a no-hitter and struck out a career-high 16 Panthers as Vanguard and Chapman split a nonconference doubleheader Saturday.

The Lions had one error, which prevented a perfect game, as Olvera faced one batter more than the minimum.

Olvera had an RBI single in the second game. She drove in April Glenn for the Lions’ only score of the second contest.

Jen Winford held Vanguard to four hits, and the Panthers scored single runs in the first and third innings to hold on for the win.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore outfielder Chris Fung went two for four with two runs batted in the nonconference home game Saturday, OCC’s seventh straight nonconference win.

Orange Coast College (13-2-1) scored four runs in the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Mike Ferraro drove in a run with a double and freshman first baseman Austin Elliott followed up with a RBI single.

Freshman catcher Jourdan Watanabe had two RBIs.

Sophomore starting pitcher Brandon Dixon improved to 3-0 with three shutout innings. The left-hander struck out two and allowed one hit.

The Pirates, who are 8-0-1 at home, will play host to Santa Ana in a nonconference game Tuesday at 2 p.m.

SAN BERNARDINO — The Lions dropped a Golden State Athletic Conference road doubleheader Saturday.

The Lions had just one run against three-time All-GSAC pitcher Steve Goins, who led the No. 13 Lancers to a 6-1 victory in the first game. Daniel Black hit a double in the seventh to drive in Luke Iverson.

Vanguard fell to 6-7, 2-6 in conference, while Cal Baptist is now 14-5, 4-4.

The Lions play host to Cal State San Marcos Tuesday.

COSTA MESA — Vanguard stretched a five-point halftime lead to a 14-point win over Golden State Athletic Conference visitor Azusa Pacific Saturday night.

Senior Jessica Richter led the Lions (20-3, 16-1 in conference) with 16 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, followed by senior Melissa Cook, who had 14 points. Junior Lauren Gregory had 14 points and five steals.

The Lions play host to Point Loma Nazarene in a first-place showdown Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Vanguard couldn’t contain Mike Danielian, and trailed Azusa Pacific for the entirety of Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference home game.

Danielian led all scorers with 21 points to prevent Vanguard from extending a five-game winning streak.

Andrew Ellis led the Lions with 17 points, followed by Greg Scott with 13 points and five assists. Dennis Heenan added 10 points and three steals.

APU is now 19-8, 12-5 in conference.

The Lions (18-8, 11-6) will host Pointa Loma Nazarene Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Big West Championships

LONG BEACH — The UC Irvine women’s team finished second and the men’s team was third after the final day of competition Saturday at Belmont Plaza Pool.

UCI sophomore Lyndsay DePaul won the 200-yard women’s butterfly with an NCAA “A” cut time of one minute, 57.52 seconds to win her third individual title of the meet.

UCI senior Jackie Jones won the one-meter competition to sweep the diving events with a score of 272.75.

UCI freshman Ann Tsuchiya was third in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:14.30, while freshman Chelsea Greene was fourth (17:26.81).

UCI sophomore Sarah DeYoreo finished seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:07.26).

Senior Tanya Nielsen was ninth in the 100 free ( 51.76).

UCI sophomore Amy Lim was 14th in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.35).

Representing the UCI men, senior Eddie Erazo, who won all three of his individual events, won the 200 fly with an NCAA “A” cut time and UCI record of 1:43.82.

Freshman diver Miles Smith won the three-meter competition to sweep the Big West diving titles with a score of 321.5.

The relay team of sophomore Nate Rogers, Erazo, freshman Garrett Thompson and junior Will Wollam won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:01.98.

Freshman Christian Lawrence had the top finish in the 1,650 free (16:39.66).

Sophomore Chris Rosales was sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:03.45), while sophomore Chris Sanchez was 11th in the 200 back (1:56.16) and Will Wollam was eighth in the 100 free (45.99).

The UC Santa Barbara women won the team title with 926 points, followed by UCI’s 655.

The Anteater men’s 624 points trailed UCSB (856) and UC Davis (674).

The Anteaters will now prepare for the NCAA championships and NCAA zone “E” diving regionals. The zone “E” diving regionals are March 13-15 in Oklahoma City.

The NCAA women’s championships will be March 20-22 in Columbus, Ohio.

The men’s championships will be held in Federal Way, Wash. March 27-29.

IRVINE — Junior opposite Jon Steller had 16 kills to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters to a 30-23, 30-25, 30-28 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory Saturday at the Bren Events Center.

Sophomore Cole Reinholm (nine kills), senior Aaron Harrell (eight), freshman Cory Yoder (seven) and freshman Kevin Wynne (seven) all added to UCI’s balanced attack.

Junior setter Ryan Ammerman had 41 assists, three service aces, eight digs and three blocks, while junior libero Brent Asuka had a match-high 13 digs to help UCI improve to 9-9, 6-7 in conference.

UCSB, ranked No. 14, fell to 7-8, 5-6.

The Anteaters play host to Ohio State Friday and Saturday at the Bren Center.

Oregon 5, UC Irvine 1

IRVINE — Freshman Khunpol Issara won in singles and doubles for the host Anteaters in the nonconference match Saturday.

Khunpol defeated Oregon’s Geoff Embry, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, then teamed with senior Victor Lamm for an 8-6 doubles win.

UCI fell to 2-4, while Oregon improved to 6-4.

Vanguard fell to 3-1, 1-1 in conference, while the Sunbirds are now 5-0, 3-0.

UC Irvine Invitational

IRVINE — The No. 10 Anteaters split their games Saturday. They lost in the first round to San Jose State, 13-3, but came back for a consolation win over UC San Diego, 6-2, at UCI.

UC Irvine was up just 3-2 against No. 15 UCSD, but scored three unanswered second-half goals to close out the match. Junior Gianna Rossi scored twice, and Newport Harbor High product Ashling Taylor was one of four other players to score a single goal for UCI (6-4). Senior Lauren Machanis made seven saves.

Sophomore Kat Plummer, as well as freshmen Cortney Collyer and Caitlin Haskell all scored for the ‘Eaters against No. 7 San Jose State.

UC Irvine will continue tournament play with another consolation-bracket game today at 9:15 a.m. at Corona del Mar High.
