GREER’S BEST BUYS:

Get ready to try the latest fro-yo shop — Swirls just debuted in Costa Mesa. And today Swirls donates a portion of its proceeds to Mariners Elementary School in Newport Beach. Swirls differs from other frozen yogurt chains by also offering unique desserts and healthy teas. It offers four natural nonfat frozen yogurts: the popular, creamy-tart original flavor, green tea, and for those who prefer sweet tastes, blueberry and mango-passion fruit. And Swirls offers never-been-seen-before powders in chocolate, taro, honeydew, watermelon and more that you can sprinkle on your yogurt to add flavor.

Its unique desserts include a fusion crepe (debuting next week). The Asian-American-style crepe differs from the French style. It’s cooked to order, comes in a cone shape, and the texture is firmer than soft crepes. Swirls fills the warm crepe with frozen yogurt, Nutella and your choice of fruit toppings. And the Swirls Shaved Snow desserts are sweetened with a dairy product that adds a milky, slushy taste with yogurt, and fresh-fruit toppings. Owner Cindy Ton provides a bright and fresh concept that appeals to families with small children. She even offers a kids’ room that perfectly fits the younger set, with miniature chairs and tables. Open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday at 1799 Newport Blvd.; (949) 764-0093, www.goswirls.com.
