WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 8, UC Davis 7

DAVIS — Senior Jessica Lewis scored two goals to help lead the No. 11-ranked Anteaters to an upset over No. 6-ranked UC Davis in a nonconference game Friday at Schaal Aquatics Center.

The Anteaters (8-5) broke a 6-6 tie, as Lewis and junior Sarah Frost each scored to put UCI up, 8-6, midway through the final quarter. Senior goalie Lauren Machanis recorded eight saves for the Anteaters. Goalie Casey Hines had four saves for the Aggies.

The Anteaters play today at Cal at noon.

IRVINE — Junior Jon Steller tied an Anteaters record with six service aces, helping No. 6 UCI sweep the nonconference match, 30-23, 30-25, 30-13, Friday at the Bren Center.

Steller shares the top spot in the UCI match record book with Matt Webber (2004), Mike Rupp (1999) and Jarrett Jensen, who recorded six aces twice in 2002. Steller and freshman outside hitter Cody Yoder each had a match-high 14 kills.

The Anteaters (10-9) hit at least .448 in each of the three games, as junior Ryan Ammerman dished out 41 assists. Yoder hit .545 for the match.

No. 10 Ohio State fell to 8-4.

The teams will meet again today at 2 p.m. at UCI.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore outside hitter Kevin Welch, a Corona del Mar High product, had 30 kills with four solo blocks and two block assists in the Pirates’ Pacific Coast League-opening, 26-30, 30-26, 30-23, 23-30, 15-13, victory Friday night.

Freshman middle blocker Mike Stewart contributed 17 kills and six block assists, while freshman libero Andrew Pizula had 11 digs and freshman setter Doug Astor tallied 56 assists for OCC (5-2, 1-0 in league).

Casey Sawyer led Palomar (2-5) with 16 kills.

HAYWARD — Freshman catcher Angela St. Croix was six for six with four doubles and two triples, helping the Lions sweep the nonconference doubleheader Friday at Patten.

St. Croix had eight RBIs for the No. 10-ranked Lions.

Freshmen pitchers Bethany Dempster and Patricia Olvera earned the wins for Vanguard.

IRVINE — Jessica Broadfoot, Brooke Bartlett, Ali Borwicz and Heidi Kaloi each won in singles without giving up more than three games in each set for the Anteaters in a nonconference match Friday.

UC Irvine (6-4), ranked No. 35, swept in doubles to clinch the doubles point.

Bartlett, the Anteaters’ No. 5 singles player, defeated Jenny Sperry, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the UCI victory for the third time this week.
