Help name Estancia and Costa Mesa stadium and team room

Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board Policy 7510 calls for the establishment of an Ad Hoc Committee with representatives from both Newport and Costa Mesa.

The committee’s purpose is to review the proposals submitted to the Board for the purpose of naming District facilities and render a recommendation to the Board.

President Fluor has authorized the establishment of the Ad Hoc Committee and the review. It should be noted that the Board’s Policy 7510 calls for the naming and dedication of District facilities to be considered “no sooner than two years after a person’s demise.” One of the current proposals is outside the Board’s existing policy however, the Board feels there is considerable cause to warrant a review of the proposal and encourages the Ad Hoc Committee to consider the request and they are open to receiving a recommendation that requires a slight modification to the current policy.

The Ad Hoc Committee has been established and is scheduled to meet on:

Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at the District Education Center, Superintendent’s Conference Room - 2985-A Bear Street, Costa Mesa, Ca

Any member of the public is welcome to attend the meeting and provide input relative to the naming proposal(s).

The first request on behalf of the community is to name the new EHS/CMHS stadium in honor of Jim Scott, Sr., and the second is to designate the new stadium team room/concession building in the name of Bubba Kapko, an Estancia graduate who was tragically and accidentally killed two years ago.

Please feel free to share your written feedback and comments by sending them to: Dr. Tom Antal at tantal@nmusd.us if you cannot join us for the meeting.

If you have any questions about the process or the meeting scheduled for March 4, 2008 please call 714-424-7516.

We are hoping to forward a recommendation to the Board regarding the proposals at their March 11, 2008 Board meeting.

The official grand opening and dedication of the new EHS/CMHS stadium is scheduled for Friday, April 25, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. with the Costa Mesa Community Run scheduled on Saturday, April 26, 2008.
