Estancia, Mesa players earn all-league honors

Estancia High guards Mark Allred and Troy McClanahan received first-team All-Orange Coast League honors for the first time after helping turn around the Eagles boys’ basketball program, and Costa Mesa guard Mikey Molina made the second team.

Allred, a senior, and McClanahan, a junior, played vital roles in the Eagles bouncing back from a season in which they finished 2-24, 0-9 in league. Estancia this season finished 14-14, 5-4 for second place in league, earning a CIF Southern Section Division III-A first-round home playoff game.

Allred, who averaged 9.8 points per game, hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer that upset visiting league champ Laguna Beach, 53-52, and secured second place in league in the last regular-season game.

In the first-round of the playoffs, Allred scored a career-high 29 points in the Eagles’ 73-64 victory, the program’s first playoff win since the 2004-05 season.

McClanahan, a second-team pick last season, led the team in scoring (10 points) and was its best three-point shooterRepresenting Estancia on the second team were senior forward Barry Fryslie and junior forward Tim Neumann. Each recorded double-doubles in the playoffs.

Molina was Costa Mesa’s lone representative on the all-league team. The junior led the team to its only win of the season. He had 12 points in a 38-36 league victory against Calvary Chapel coming in the regular-season finale that put the Mustangs at 1-26, 1-8 in league.

Laguna Beach senior Marcus Hairston was the league MVP.
