Spartan Invitational

SAN JOSE — UC Irvine senior Selaneé Henderson shot 218 over 54 holes (71-71-75) to capture medalist honors for the second consecutive year at the Almaden Country Club Tuesday.

Henderson, the first two-time champion at the event that began in 1983, finished two shots ahead of Pia Halbig of Cal. This is the senior’s first tournament win of the year and the sixth of her career. She is the record holder for career wins at UCI.

As a team, UCI was third in the 15-team field with a three-round total of 906 (298-302-306), seven shots behind team champion Cal (899). San Jose State was second (904), Washington was fourth (911) and San Francisco was fifth (912).

UCI senior Kim Lorenzana was ninth (226), her third top-10 finish of the season. Sophomore Patty Chawalitmetha was 27th (231), freshman Hillary Packard was 29th (232) and sophomore Henna Cho was 38th (236).

COSTA MESA — The No. 10 Lions split their Golden State Athletic Conference-opening doubleheader Tuesday at Vanguard.

In Game 1, senior Jen Olvera improved to 9-0, allowing just one run in the Lions’ win. Olvera scattered four hits and struck out five for Vanguard (19-5, 1-1 in conference). The Lions scored the winning run in the second inning, when freshman Christina Hart’s bunt single scored freshman Kaysie Flasck.

But No. 25 Concordia (19-6, 1-1) rebounded for the Game 2 victory. Eagles pitcher Kory Briggs allowed just six Vanguard hits in six innings, although VU sophomore April Glenn was two for three.

Vanguard plays host to Patten on Saturday at noon.

COSTA MESA — Brett Wallach and Ryan Dunn each had a hit in the Pirates’ Orange Empire Conference-opening loss Tuesday.

The Pirates, losers of four straight, dropped to 13-6-1, 0-1 in conference. Fullerton improved to 16-2, 1-0.

OCC plays at Riverside Thursday at 2 p.m.

CYPRESS — Kevin Kordestani, Andy Ong and Kevin Tran each won in singles in the Pirates’ Orange Empire Conference match Tuesday.

The doubles team of Kevin Saenz and Landon Draper, as well as partners Kordestani and Ong contributed a doubles win each for OCC (6-3, 3-1 in conference).

MALIBU — The Anteaters lost to three-set singles matches in their nonconference setback at Pepperdine Tuesday.

The Waves’ No. 19-ranked Andre Begemann defeated UCI’s Alex Sundling, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match. Pepperdine’s Johannes de Villiers defeated Anteaters freshman Stephen Stege 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in No. 5 singles to conclude the match.

UCI plays host to Rice Friday at 1 p.m.
