Two Newport-Mesa residents died early this morning in a single-car accident on the 405 Freeway that prompted the California Highway Patrol to close the Bristol Street offramp for more than three hours.

A spokesman for the highway patrol said the driver, a 26-year-old Costa Mesa man, and the passenger, a 26-year-old Newport Beach woman, were killed shortly after 2:20 a.m. when their 2004 Saturn left the offramp, rolled down an embankment and landed on its roof on the Bristol Street offramp. The spokesman would not release the couple’s names.

Officers shut down the offramp at 2:32 a.m. and reopened it at 6:08 a.m. No other cars were involved in the accident.
