Rivals battle in extra innings

Former Sunset League rivals Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley went at it Monday, and the Oilers and Barons needed extra innings to decide the outcome.

And it was host Huntington that came away with the nonleague victory.

In an International tiebreaker, Cory Schlinsog delivered a double in the eighth inning to set up the winning score that allowed Huntington to come away with a 6-5 triumph.

Schlinsog had a four for five game to pace the Oilers offense.

In her first three games of the 2008 season, the sophomore has gone seven for 11 with a home run and three doubles.

Lauren Stuhr hit a lead-off home run as Huntington took an early 3-0 lead. After Huntington Beach added another run in the second, Fountain Valley stormed back and scored four runs in the third with three doubles by Colleen Cayton, Marisa Tamez and Katelyn Jaehn to tie the score at 4-4.

The Oilers again took the lead on a two-out, RBI-single by Amanda Horowitz in the bottom of the fourth.

Horowitz also got the win in a complete-game effort.

Sophomore Meghan White had a single and RBI, and freshman Vicki Galasso doubled, singled and drove in two runs for the Oilers.

Huntington began its season Saturday with two games at the Downey Tournament. The Oilers opened the tournament with a 3-0 shutout of Paramount but later lost 7-1 to Kennedy, the No. 2-ranked team in Division II.

In the win over Paramount, Horowitz threw a one-hitter, Schlinsog hit a solo home run and double and Courtney Dial tripled.

Marina, ranked fifth in the Division I preseason poll, began its season last Friday with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over host Rosary.

The Vikings scored two runs in the top-half of the sixth behind an RBI-double by Rachel Gaber and RBI-single by Kellie Cuadras to take a 4-3 lead.

That lead stood although Rosary had one final chance to tie the score, but with two out in the bottom of the seventh, the potential tying run was gunned down at the plate to end the game.

Jamie Sullivan doubled among two hits and drove in a run and Mariah Nogueira had an RBI double for the Vikings. Taysia Kaufman got the win.

On Saturday, Marina improved to 3-0 by scoring a pair of easy wins over L.B. Millikan and Peninsula at the Cypress Tournament.

In a 9-1 rout of Millikan, Sullivan threw a one-hitter in a five-innings performance and also had a hit and two RBI on offense.

Nogueira went two for three with two RBI, Lana Rutkin doubled and drove in three runs, Erin Cuevas tripled with an RBI and Shannon Simmons had two hits.

The Vikings also took a 4-2 decision from Peninsula. Kaufman struck out six to post her second win of the season and also singled, Cuevas went two for three with an RBI, Nogueira tripled and Chloe Kaneko had an RBI.

Ocean View opened its season Saturday with a pair of runaway victories at the Costa Mesa Tournament.

The Seahawks pounded out 21 hits en route to a 21-0 rout of Sage Hill, then had 16 hits in a 21-3 spanking of University.

Against Sage Hill, Holli Floetker threw a no-hitter.

The sophomore also hit a triple as did teammate Brandice Cutspec and Brenna Klein doubled.

Floetker also had a two-run home run in the first inning and Cutspec had a pair of triples in the win over University. Klein limited the Trojans to three hits for the win.
