WOMEN’S WATER POLO

San Diego State 6, UC Irvine 5

IRVINE — Junior Sarah Frost and sophomore Kat Plummer each scored twice for the No. 9-ranked Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Friday at UCI.

Senior keeper Lauren Machanis had seven saves for UC Irvine (9-7, 2-4 in conference), which tied the score three different times but never led.

No. 6 San Diego State improved to 14-2, 2-1.

UCI plays host to No. 8 Arizona State today at noon in another MPSF game.

IRVINE — The host Lasers swept the matchup of unbeaten Pacific Coast Conference teams, 30-23, 30-19, 30-22, Friday night at Irvine Valley.

Irvine Valley (8-1, 3-0 in conference), the defending state champion, led throughout in Game 1. The Lasers used a 10-2 run to create separation in Game 2.

OCC freshman outside hitter Grant Keene got successive kills in Game 3 to pull the Pirates (6-3, 2-1) within 5-4. OCC then pulled within 10-8 on sophomore middle blocker Jake Awerkamp’s kill, but couldn’t get closer.

The Pirates play at San Diego Mesa on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

MEN’S TENNIS

Rice 7, UC Irvine 0

IRVINE — The UCI tandem of senior Ajay Ahluwalia and sophomore Zac Tsai won at No. 2 doubles for the hosts in the nonconference match Friday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The UCI duo prevailed, 8-6, though the Owls won two of three to earn the doubles point.

The visitors, ranked No. 13, won all but one singles match in straight sets as UCI senior Alex Sundling prolonged his No. 1 singles match before falling, 6-2, 6-7, 12-10.

UCI fell to 4-6, while Rice is now 9-3.
