BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Best of the West Tournament

POWAY — Newport Harbor High senior setter Kyle Caldwell led the Sailors with 12 kills, but they lost to Mira Costa of Redondo Beach, 25-18, 12-25, 12-15, in the fifth-place match Saturday at Epic Volleyball Club.

Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said Caldwell stayed in the San Diego area as the UCLA-bound player will fly early today out of San Diego with his family to Detroit. Glenn said the Detroit Pistons are honoring Caldwell’s late grandfather, George Yardley, a Hall of Famer and Newport Harbor product, during their game against the Chicago Bulls.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Yardley’s historic 2,000-point season as he became the first player in NBA history to reach the milestone.

The Sailors (5-2), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, finished sixth and went 2-2 on the final day of the tournament featuring a best two-out-of-three format.

Newport Harbor beat No. 5-ranked Woodbridge, 25-20, 25-17, in the opener, then lost to Valencia of Valencia, ranked No. 3 in Division II, 16-25, 23-25, beat Punahou of Hawaii, 25-17, 32-30, before losing to Mira Costa, ranked No. 1 in Division I.
