Man dies in stand-off with off-duty police officer

One man died and another was wounded after a shooting in Temecula over the weekend that involved an off-duty Costa Mesa police officer, authorities said.

Temecula police reported the three individuals were involved in an altercation that started about 7:20 p.m. Saturday at a local restaurant, during which the Costa Mesa officer shot both men, police said. They were transported to a local hospital where one man died from his injuries, police said.

The Costa Mesa officer sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital, police said.

No names are being released at this point, but Costa Mesa police officials said their officer had been released from the hospital and is at home resting.
