Langer is longer

Two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer added another victory to his already-long list of professional accomplishments Sunday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Langer won the Toshiba Classic after finishing three-under-par through a seven-hole playoff. He tied the 2007 champion, two-time Champions Tour Player of the Year Jay Haas, after sinking a clutch 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th in regulation, and won the tournament on the same hole.

Langer, the best golfer to emerge from Germany, took home a $255,000 first-place purse in his second win on the Champions Tour.

Both Langer and Haas shot 14-under-par 199 through 54 holes to force the playoff.

Until Sunday, every tournament winner on the 2008 Champions Tour came from behind to win. But Langer broke that streak, as he was three strokes ahead of the field after 36 holes Friday.

Haas missed a 3-foot putt by inches that would have continued the sudden-death playoff, the fourth in the Classic’s 14-year existence.
