Newport police to host weekend DUI checkpoint

Newport Beach Police Department will have a sobriety checkpoint 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday on northbound Jamboree Road at Santa Barbara Drive.

The checkpoint was chosen in part because of its high visibility and close proximity to numerous bars and restaurants, according to police. Motorists will be greeted at the checkpoint and given a pamphlet on driving under the influence prepared by the Newport Beach Police Traffic Division.

Checkpoints tend to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers on the road, but do not necessarily produce a dramatic increase in arrests, according to the police department. Newport Beach police are conducting the checkpoint primarily to educate drivers and deter the public from driving under the influence.
