MISSION VIEJO — Freshman catcher Jourdan Watanabe went three for four with a pair of three-run home runs for the Pirates in their Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday.

Watanabe also had three runs. Sophomore Wes Kartch went three for four with two runs and an RBI, while freshman Drew Hilman (two for five) had five RBIs for OCC (16-6-1, 3-1 in conference). Freshman Brian Schmitz went two for two with three RBIs and two.

Saddleback, which used 10 pitchers, dropped to 11-12, 0-4.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore left fielder Daniel Black drove in the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning, scoring junior shortstop Zachary Leighton in the Lions’ nonconference game Tuesday.

Freshman starter Matthew Curtis pitched 5 1/3 innings for Vanguard (8-13), striking out three and allowing three hits to improve to 1-1. Lions freshman Jordan Wishmyer earned his first save by striking out three in 3 2/3 innings in relief.

LA MIRADA — Lions senior Jen Olvera shut down the Biola bats in the first game, but the Eagles squeaked out a win in the second of the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday at Biola.

No. 10 Vanguard (22-6, 2-2 in conference) scored all of its runs in Game 1 in the second inning. Sophomore left fielder Katie Daniels, a Newport Harbor High product, hit a three-run home run. Olvera improved to 9-0 with the win, striking out 15 and walking none in seven innings.

No. 19 Biola (7-11, 1-3) earned its first conference win in Game 2. Vanguard was held to just four hits, two of those by sophomore second baseman Jennifer Bergh.

Callaway Golf Invitational

RANCHO SANTA FE — UC Irvine finished ninth Tuesday at The Farms Golf Club.

UCI’s Sean Shahi placed 25th at 223 after shooting a one-under 71 in the final round and was joined by John Chin, who had an even-par 72 Tuesday to also finish 25th.

Kenny Kim shot a 72 and was 34th at 225, Derek Uyesaka (80) placed 58th at 231 and Bryan Harris (74) finished 68th at 236.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

MISSION VIEJO — The Pirates remained undefeated and stayed in first place in the Orange Empire Conference after the first round of team dual matches Tuesday.

Brittany Bass, Brittney Furuvald, Evelyn Wallace, Kalin Eshelman, Emily Garcia and Jasmine Mathieson each won in singles for the Pirates (10-0, 5-0 in conference.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Giovanni Villicana swept his No. 1 singles sets and partnered with sophomore Landon Draper for a No. 2 doubles victory on Tuesday, helping the Pirates finish the first half of Orange Empire Conference play in second place.

OCC (8-3, 5-1 in conference) trails first-place Riverside. The Pirates play host to Fullerton Thursday before a showdown at Riverside next Tuesday.
