McFadden Square ceremony set for St. Patrick’s Day

Newport Beach city officials will break ground on the McFadden Square Centennial Legacy monument at noon Monday at the base of Newport Pier at Newport Boulevard and McFadden Place.

Organizers planned the groundbreaking ceremony for St. Patrick’s Day in honor of the McFadden brothers, who began shipping from Newport Beach and developed McFadden’s Wharf over a century ago.

The McFadden Square Centennial Legacy Project was conceived in 2006 to commemorate the city of Newport Beach’s centennial anniversary. The project includes granite benches surrounding a bronze sculpture and a circular walking path marked with significant events from throughout the city’s history.

The square is expected to be completed before this summer.
