Orange Coast 7, Cypress 6

COSTA MESA — Sophomore outfielder Cory Olson hit a game-winning, two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Pirates to the dramatic Orange Empire Conference win Thursday at OCC.

Olson hit an 0-2 curveball over the fence, scoring sophomore Wes Kartch and extending to a four-game conference winning streak for OCC (17-6-1, 4-1 in conference). Olson finished two for four, with three runs scored and the two RBIs.

Drew Hillman was three for four with two RBIs for OCC, and fellow freshman Ryan Sheeks had a two-run double. Freshman Brett Wallach earned the win in relief.

Cypress fell to 17-6, 3-2.

Orange Coast plays a make-up nonconference game at Southwestern today at 1 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Freshman pitcher Patty Olvera is still undefeated for the No. 10-ranked Lions after pitching in a nonconference doubleheader Thursday.

Olvera scattered eight hits in the second game, staying perfect at 4-0.

Senior Jennifer Olvera pitched seven out of eight innings in the first game, and freshman Bethany Dempster (3-1) closed the game to take the win.

Dempster pitched a shutout eighth inning and sophomore April Glenn hit the game-winning fielder’s choice in the first game, scoring Katie Daniels for the 2-1 lead.

Jennifer Olvera had two hits and an RBI in the second game. The Lions (22-6) will play Azusa Pacific Saturday at noon.

COSTA MESA — No. 1 singles player Brittany Bass led off five singles victories for Orange Coast as the Pirates won their 11th straight match.

The Pirates (11-0, 6-0 in the Orange Empire Conference) will continue conference play against Riverside Tuesday.

IRVINE — The No. 66 Anteaters swept each set in the Big West Conference match Thursday at UCI.

The doubles teams of Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin, Lisa Shih and Jessica Broadfoot, and Ali Borowicz and Brooke Bartlett all won for the ’Eaters (8-6, 3-1 in conference).

In singles, Bernhard, Fermin, Broadfoot, Bartlett, Borowicz and Heidi Kaloi all won for UCI, which plays host to Yale on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

IRVINE — Sophomores Kat Plummer and Erin Kiene, as well as senior Jessica Lewis, scored two goals each as the Anteaters eased to the nonconference victory Thursday at UCI.

Senior Lauren Machanis had 13 saves for No. 7 UCI (11-7), while sophomore Kelsey Wilcox added two.

No. 15 Indiana fell to 10-9.

COSTA MESA — The Pirates coasted to a win Thursday as Orange Coast swept Fullerton in men’s singles competition. Though Fullerton pushed two matches to a third set, neither Kevin Kordestani nor Kevin Saenz allowed the win.

The Pirates (9-3, 6-1 in the Orange Empire Conference) picked up a win after losing to Riverside Feb. 28. Orange Coast will have a shot at revenge Mar. 18 when they meet Riverside again.
