Costa Mesa vs. Westminster

COSTA MESA — The Mustangs tied their dual meet opener on the boys’ side, 63-63, but dominated the field events for a girls’ win, 68-59, in nonleague action Thursday at Costa Mesa High.

For the Mustang boys, junior Antwon Byrd won the 100 meters in 10.9 seconds, also winning the 200 in 23.0 and participating in both winning relays.

Another double winner for the Mustangs was junior Robbie Gemayel, in the 110 high hurdles (17.8) and the triple jump (38 feet, 4 inches).

Kevin Astorino and Jason Rosello won the 400 and 800 in 54.6 and 2:17.1, respectively, while Stephen Guzowski took the shot put (45-7) and Duke Yasuda won the 300 intermediate hurdles (47.9).

On the girls’ side, sophomore Tatianna Williams swept the high jump (4-10), long jump (15-2) and triple jump (34-9) for the Mustangs. Senior Arlene Sanchez won the 1,600 in 6:01, and the 3,200 in 13:36.

Cheyenne Lopez and Seu Ieremia took the shot put (32-2) and discus (92-5), respectively.

Coach Diane Bjelland said junior Teagan LaBare’s time of 27.3 seconds in the 200 was a top-10 time for the Mustangs in the last 10 years.

Costa Mesa has qualified 43 athletes for the Surf City Invitational on March 22 at Huntington Beach High, Bjelland said.

The Mustangs then have their Orange Coast League opener against Laguna Beach on April 3 at 3 p.m., at Orange Coast College.

Academy League

four-way meet

MISSION VIEJO — Senior Cody Gates, junior Dustin Stroud and sophomore Kevin Schaefer won two events each to help the Lightning score 75 points to finish second behind Whitney’s 79 at Saddleback Valley College.

Stroud won the 110 high hurdles in 17.5 seconds and 300 intermediate hurdles in 45.2 seconds, and also contributed to the victorious 1,600 relay (3:45.4) that also included freshman Colton Gyulay, senior Sean McElroy and senior Connor Rose.

Schaefer won the 100 meters in 11.4 seconds and the 200 in 24 seconds.

Gates won the shot put (42 feet, 1 inch) and the discus (123-0). Sage Hill sophomore Andy Multari won the high jump with a 5-10 clearance. St Margaret’s finished behind Sage with 44 points in front of Saddleback Valley Christian with 34.

On the girls’ side, freshman Megan Kim won the 100 in 13.1 seconds and the 200 in 27.7 seconds, as the Lightning finished third with 45 points.

St. Margaret’s won with 94 points and Whitney was second with 62.

Sophomore Jackie Dion broke Sage Hill’s high jump record with a 4-11 clearance to win the event. The previous record was 4-10 set last year by Kellee Kim.

Lightning junior Cait Williamson won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 23.7 seconds.

Sage Hill will compete Saturday at the Ontario Christian Invite.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Eagles seniors Andrew Ayala and Johnny Person were co-medalists, each shooting three-over-par 38 for Estancia in the Orange Coast League match Thursday at Meadowlark Golf Club.

Ryan Burns (41), Chris Noren (41) and Kyle Anderson (51) also scored for Estancia (4-2, 3-0 in league).

The Eagles next play host for the 30-team Mesa Verde Tournament, which begins Monday at noon at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Laguna Hills 198

LAGUNA WOODS — Sea Kings senior Taylor Keddington and sophomore Josh Starnes both shot one-under 35 to share medalist honors in a Pacific Coast League opener at Laguna Woods Golf Club Thursday.

Junior Camden Nicholson shot 37 and senior Connor Corrigan carded a 38 for CdM (4-4, 1-0 in league). Jeff Jones also scored with a 43, and junior Nick Freeman also had a 43. CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said he felt bad because he did not go with alternate Tanner Trauthen, a freshman who shot a 36.

The Sea Kings will compete in the Mesa Verde Tournament at Mesa Verde Country Club Monday.

Dana Hills 195,

Newport Harbor 205

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Three Sailors shot three-over-par 36 as the Sailors fell to Dana Hills Thursday at El Niguel Country Club.

Mychael Clark, Chase Behr, and Travis Ruffle led Newport Harbor (4-2) in the loss. Steve Stoneman and Tad Doolin both shot 44.

The Sailors play in the Mesa Verde Tournament Monday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Sage Hill 205

ANAHEIM — Junior Mac Mace led the Lightning with his one-over-par 36 in a nonleague match Dad Miller Golf Course Thursday.

Junior Steven Choi (39), sophomore James Chai (40) freshman Patrick Brady (43) and freshman Jared Hoffman (47) also scored for Sage Hill (2-4).

Steve Lim of Fairmont Prep was the medalist shooting one-under 34.

The Lightning play against Capistrano Valley Christian Monday at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Estancia 15, Orange 3

COSTA MESA — No. 1 singles player Bradley Fisher led the Eagles, who swept Orange in singles play Thursday afternoon.

Ely Zaidler and Danny O’Neil also easily swept their singles matches for Estancia, with all six set scores either 6-0 or 6-1.

No. 1 doubles pair Rony Argueta and Kevin Thomas kept the streak alive, sweeping their doubles matches, 7-5, 6-4, 6-0.

Estancia (4-2) will play Monday at Westminster.

COSTA MESA — Jeff Dye had 10 kills and nine digs to lead the Mustangs, but Servite won the nonleague match, 25-17, 23-25, 27-25, 25-12, Thursday at Costa Mesa High.

Garrett Frazier added seven kills and Henry Tran finished with 23 assists for Costa Mesa (4-5). Mustangs Coach Ryan Bagwell said Andy Feldman, who had eight digs, played great defense.

Costa Mesa plays in the Orange County Championships today.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 14, Irvine 4

IRVINE — Junior Zach Gagnon had four goals to lead the Sailors to victory Thursday at Irvine High.

Spencer Baratto, Sean Thompson, Cory Ames and Daniel Apple all added two goals for Newport Harbor (3-2).

Thompson, a junior, had two assists, while Baratto, a junior, and Ames, a senior, added one assist each.

Baratto also had six goals in the Sailors’ 15-8 loss to Beckman on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor plays at Santa Margarita on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

NEWPORT BEACH — Pitcher Jane Messersmith helped lead the Sailors to the nonleague win Thursday at Newport Harbor.
