HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Corona del Mar High boys’ volleyball team held off Back Bay rival Newport Harbor, 17-25, 26-24, 15-13, Saturday at Edison High to advance to Monday night’s Gold Division title match of the Orange County Championships.

The Sea Kings will face Foothill in the championship match Monday at 7 p.m. at Edison High.

CdM senior Gus Ellis, bound for Stanford, had 11 kills, tops against Newport Harbor, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division I. Junior Dylan Davis and senior Jeff Carlson had six kills each, while sophomore Weston Nielsen added four for the Sea Kings, ranked No. 3 in CIF Division II.

Senior Spencer Brown had eight digs, and junior Connor Bannan tallied 27 assists for CdM (10-4).

“We obviously had to play pretty good to win three matches,” CdM Coach Steve Conti said. “I still think we can get better on some things. We got ourselves in some situations where we gave up some runs to some teams. We were tied at 13 in the first game against Newport Harbor, then Kyle Caldwell went back there and served seven straight points.”

Caldwell, a senior bound for UCLA, finished with 27 assists, nine kills and three aces for the Sailors (10-3).

Newport Harbor trailed, 24-20, in the second game, but rallied with four straight points. However, CdM scored the final two. Tucker Peleuses had 12 kills, Mark Liebermann had six kills and three aces and Andrew Kaban had seven digs for Newport Harbor.

The Sea Kings outlasted Dana Hills in their final pool-play game Saturday morning, 25-22, 32-34, 15-9, and finished second in their pool.

CdM, the defending CIF Southern Section Division II champion, then beat Laguna Beach in a Gold Division quarterfinal, 25-22, 25-18. The Breakers, ranked No. 5 in CIF Division II, had beaten the Sea Kings, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, Wednesday at CdM.

Davis had seven kills to again lead the Sea Kings against the Breakers. Carlson had six kills, senior Dillon Flinn had four and Bannan dished out 19 assists.

Against Dana Hills, Davis had nine kills, while Ellis and Carlson tallied eight kills each. Nielsen had six kills, Brown had nine digs and junior Danny Baker added seven digs.

The Knights swept CdM in the opening round of pool play Friday — so the Sea Kings will be looking for revenge.

“They pretty much destroyed us in pool play,” Conti said.

Newport Harbor started its day with a 25-20, 25-14 pool-play win over Tesoro to win its pool. Liebermann had 10 kills and Peleuses had nine kills. Caldwell had 25 assists, five aces and three kills.

In a Gold Division quarterfinal, the Sailors defeated Los Alamitos, ranked No. 3 in CIF Division I, 28-26, 25-23. Peleuses had 12 kills and Caldwell had 22 assists and five kills.
