Softball group vies for ‘Group One’ user status

The Costa Mesa City Council will rehear a request from the Pacific Girls Fast Pitch Softball group to be considered a “Group One” athletic field user under the Recreation Department’s field use policy Tuesday night.

The designation, reserved for groups with open registration and a membership comprised of more than 90% Costa Mesa residents (with exceptions), would give the softball league a preferential status for field use in the city.

Costa Mesa does not yet provide youth girls’ softball programs for residents, according to staff.

While the motion was defeated last month, Councilwoman Katrina Foley brought the issue back to the board, saying its supporters in the audience left after the board had apparently voted in favor of the measure and then retroactively reconsidered the motion.
